We’ve already been to Oretta for drinks (we love their King St deck in Summer!) and visited its bakery sister, Oretta Café, a lot of times. But last Sunday was our first time there to taste their weekend brunch.
The place is beautiful and I already knew it as their gigantic windows can show you everything from outside. But still, it’s different from what I expected, it’s casual without losing their glamour.
They have the Colazione dei Campioni (Breakfast of the champions) on weekends, a prefix menu with one mimosa, any dish from the menu and one bombolone (an Italian sweet pastry filled with a choice of cream made from pistachio, Nutella, lemon or tiramisu) for $30. You can also pay $ 40 and have bottomless mimosas ??.
We both opted for the menu. I ordered the Tagliata di Manzo ($22), prepared with 6oz flatiron steak, fried eggs, truffle potatoes and black truffle. I don’t usually eat steak in the morning but now I think I should do it more often! I loved the seasoning of the steak and potatoes. Maybe it’s not the lighter option, but it’s the perfect dish to start a busy Sunday.
Cris, my husband, ordered the Salmone Affumicato ($18), prepared with smoked salmon, red onions, capers and hard boiled hens egg. He said it was the best salmon he had had on brunch so far. A curious thing about this dish: it comes as disassembled and you have to “build” it on your own. I thought that was a good idea because you can customize it as you want. For example, it comes with dill, which has a powerful flavor and maybe you want to put just a little or none of it.
I have to confess when I first read the menu I thought I would bring the bombolone to eat later at home but at the end, it has a surprisingly light dough and I ate it with no hesitation, lol. I chose the pistachio version and it was amazing. I love pistachio and the filling tasted as natural.
Cris ordered the Nutella filling and said the taste was well balanced. Actually, you don’t need to go to Oretta (restaurant) to have those, you can eat them at Oretta Café (right beside) as well.
