Some places are perfect for enjoying good food. Some places are perfect for the photo. What about a place where you can have both?
Cafe Cancan was a pleasant surprise for us. I heard this place was so beautiful you can’t stop taking photos but the quality of their brunch was far from what I expected.
Of course I was not doubting it would serve good food, but let’s be honest: when we think about a hyped place where people go to take beautiful photos you start to suspect it’s only worthy for the photos. But Cafe Cancan is all the contrary.
Hubby and I had this incredible Sunday brunch with a couple of friends and the four of us were amazed. We all ordered the brunch special, which includes a brunch item + drip coffee + sparkling juice + kouign-amann for $29. You can upgrade your juice to a mimosa or caesar for $6 more.
I chose the steak tartare, which was seasoned to perfection. Seriously, I can’t remember a tartare so well seasoned in a long time. It was so fresh and delicious that I couldn’t believe the fries would surprise me. Yet they did. I would say it’s one of the best I had in Toronto (I can’t decide though if it was better than Barcelona Tavern ones)
Cris, my husband, ordered Eggs Benedict (as usual) and loved it. He described it as a simpler but tasty version of the traditional one. The eggs were between poached and sunny side fried.
About the kouign-amann, it was delicious as well. If you don’t know what it is (I didn’t):
It is a round multi-layered cake, originally made with bread dough (nowadays sometimes viennoiserie dough), containing layers of butter and sugar folded in, similar in fashion to puff pastry albeit with fewer layers. The cake is slowly baked until the butter puffs up the dough (resulting in its layered structure) and the sugar caramelizes. The effect is similar to a muffin-shaped, caramelized croissant.
From Wikipedia
I loved it because it’s kind of a sweet bread. If you’re not new to my blog you probably already know I’m a savoury-dish person and this was a nice surprise because it’s like having some sweet in the breakfast but not too sweet (I know, I can’t describe it, lol). Let’s say it reminds me of a sweeter croissant.
The coffee and juice were very good, unfortunately clouded by the dishes.
I have to say, it was one of the best brunches we had in Toronto so far. If you’re planning to go there I advise you to reserve it in advance because it’s a small place. Just to give you an idea, we had to reserve it two weeks before.
