Continuing my series of posts about affordable places to eat in Downtown Toronto, I’d like to share my experience at Maiz.
Maiz means “corn” in spanish and it’s the main ingredient of arepas, the main dish of this restaurant. This flat round patty is popular in some Latin American countries and makes a good meal, with variations to please almost anyone.
At Queen St W location (the one with went to) they serve it with 12 variety of fillings, including some options with meat and a veggie one. Any arepa costs $12.95 ($10.95 on Mondays).
I had the Carne Assada, with sirloin steak, cotija cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and aioli. The seasoning reminds me a lot of taco beef. And if you want to spice it up, they offer some hot sauces that I strongly recommend you to try.
My husband chose the Reina, with chicken and guacamole. Both come with street corn. Everything was so delicious!
To make our lunch perfect we ordered some beers. They have some draft options for $6.95 and a Venezuelan lager for $7.95.
